The gift of God
What is the gift of God? "The Gift of God is eternal life" (Romans 6:23) What is eternal Life? It is the exact opposite of death. "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life" (Romans 6:23). Eternal life is continued existence with no death. One writer describes it like this: " If a little bird should fly from heaven to earth and pick up one grain of sand and take it back to heaven, and repeat it once every million years (one grain of sand every million years), by the time it had taken every grain of sand from this earth to heaven, it would be put a moment in eternity." Eternal life is also a different quality of life that we experience now. The apostle Paul wrote that now we live in weakness, but then we will live in power; now we are perishable, but then we will be imperishable (1 Corinthians 15:35-44,RSV).
How can I have eternal life? "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son" (1John5:11) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). We can have eternal life only in Jesus. When we look to Him in faith and believe on Him as our Saviour from sin, we have eternal life as a gift from God. How can I be sure? "There things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). "And this is the promise thathe hath promised us, even eternal life" (1 John 2:25). We can be sure that if we believe on and accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, than God gives us eternal life. Wecan be sure because He has promise to do this for us. The certainty lies not in us, but in Him. We can trust God to do what He says. How do I believe on Jesus? "For by grace are ye saved though faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest and man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9). Saving faith (which is another way of saving belief in Jesus) is a gift from God, too. We can never be saved by our own efforts. We can never believe on Jesus by trying to make ourselves believe. The Holy Spirit from God speaks to us; He points out that we are sinners deserving death. He shows us Jesus, who died for our sins; and as we realize the Saviour's love for us and respond in love to Him, saving faith in Jesus floods our life as a gift from God. We accept Jesus as out own personal Saviour, and we have eternal life. Since I cannot earn eternal life, but must receive it as a gift from God, does it matter how I live? " Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid" (Romans 6:15). "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). "If ye love me, keep my commandments" ( John 14:15). We are saved by faith alone, but one who is saved will give evidence of his faith by his obedience. In fact, a saved, born-again Christian will want to show his love for his Saviour by following His wishes in everything. Christian freedom does not include the right to disobey God. Where will we spend eternity? "The meek shall inherit the earth" (Psalm 37:11). "We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness? (2 Peter 3:13). The earth, which God had planned to populate with happy, holy people, will finally fulfil His purpose when He recreates it to its original beauty and perfection. The redeemed will spend eternal life with God on a restored earth filled will righteousness (see Revelation 21:3). |
